The Rose Festival in Kazanluk

The festival is dedicated to the rose, known in Bulgaria as the “Queen of flowers” and a symbol of youth and beauty. Apart from the rich musical programme with folk songs, dances and a beauty contest, the festival includes ritual rose-picking in the fragrant rose fields and rose-distillation afterwards. All visitors are invited to take part in these rituals and to feel the spirit of this unusual corner of Bulgaria. One more Christian temple, dated back to the period of Despot Slav, was discovered by Bulgarian archaeologists under the church St. Peter and Pavel in the town of Melnik. Slav was an independent ruler. His origin is from the dynasty Asenevci. At first his main residency was situated in the fortress Cepina, nowadays nearby the village Dorkovo in Rhodopes Mountain Range. He moved in the fortress Melnik, tucked into the skirts of Pirin Mountain in 1212. He donated much money to many monasteries. According to his contemporaries, Slav was the most prominent person on the Balkans. He was never subservient to the will of anyone. The memory of him has been kept for many centuries.
